Plans are in the works for a new parking lot for Columbia College students that should be done by next summer.  

With growth at the college, the need for more space is inevitable. At present, 50 parking spots are available in Banks Hall lot. Styrofoam is a trademark of the plastic called expanded polystyrene. Widely used for decades, it does not absorb water easily, get damage from bacteria or mold and is lightweight. However, Styrofoam has become an environmental issue because it is impossible to recycle.

The new and improved Koepke Fitness Center.
The former Southy gymnasium got a makeover during summer break. The gym is now larger, has more equipment and has a modern look. In addition, the fitness center opens earlier for guests. Students and faculty can get in a morning workout before they start their days.

On Oct. 9-10, Hartsburg held the 19th annual Pumpkin Festival. At the Pumpkin Festival, the streets of Hartsburg were filled with many booths displaying arts, crafts and food. The festival offered entertainment, including the crowning of Pumpkin Festival King, a parade and musical performances.

If you haven’t heard by now, “The Columbian” will no longer be issuing printed newspapers after this year. Hereafter, “The Columbian” will be completely online and can be accessed at columbian.ccis.edu. The sixth edition of “Criminal Investigation: Art and the Science” written by Dr. Michael Lyman, professor of criminal justice, was recently published on Jan. 21. Dr. Lisa Ford-Brown, associate professor of speech, is working on her first book, “The DK Public Speaking Handbook,” which will be published in 2011.

Many international students attend Columbia College. They are from a variety of countries such as Russia, China, Korea, Vietnam and Brazil. In 2008, 11,773 people died in alcohol-related car crashes in the U.S., equaling 981 deaths per month. College students are not an exception.

At Columbia College, 28.24 percent of students reported to have driven while intoxicated at least once in the past month. With the annual Cleanup Columbia city-wide trash pick up event occurring this past weekend and the 40th anniversary Earth Day Festival coming up on Sunday, May 2, many Columbians are in gear to help the environment. 

The 2010 Earth Day Festival was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 25 but was postponed due to rain. Local radio station Y107 received more than 1.1 million votes and was named North America’s Most Caring Radio Station in a contest held by Foresters, a Toronto-based life insurance provider. The winner of the contest received a $50,000 donation to be added to its 2010 radiothon total for the Children’s Miracle Network.

After 15 years of service, Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman has decided not to run for reelection. Hindman began his service as mayor in April 1995 and will step down in April 2010.

American Sign Language (ASL) is dominantly used among deaf Americans. It is derived from French, so it is very similar to French sign language. Sign language is not universal. Each country has its own sign language. For example, even though we can communicate with the British by using spoken English, we can’t do that by using sign language.

SGA is beginning work on a new constitution that will go into effect next fall.  With amendments being added nearly every year, SGA President Jon Dudley, senior, said it was time for some major changes.

Faculty, staff and students came together to mourn the loss of Ryann Schmidt, Columbia College’s area coordinator for Banks and Hughes halls. Schmidt passed away Oct. 25 from a blood clot in the knee that required surgery two weeks before. Schmidt was 25. Though he died at a young age, he left many memories behind.

The Columbia College volleyball intramurals wrapped up on Nov. 5 with the final day of games at Southwell Gymnasium.  The PIE Spikers led by Faye Burchard, dean for Campus Life, won the championship game against the Mad Dogs.  Eight teams participated in the recreational division and six in the competitive division.

Richard James “Jim” Metscher, adjunct instructor of sociology, touched the lives of thousands of students in his 35 years with Columbia College, many of whom have expressed how much they were influenced by him, said Dr. Terry Smith, executive vice president and dean for academic  affairs. The void created by Metscher’s death can’t be filled, said Smith.

This 2009-2010 academic year, Columbia College added a new bachelor’s degree in environmental science and removed the environmental studies degree from the course catalog. Though many extra-curricular activities offer students credit hours, few will give them a full three credit hours in one semester.  Mock Trial, sponsored by Barry Langford, chair of the criminal justice department, and Dr. David Roebuck, professor of political science, can allow students to earn those hours -- if you are signed up for the class.

The Columbia College volleyball team may have nine new members, but the whole team has one goal in mind: winning. That is just what they have done in September, starting with Labor Day weekend, winning four out of four games to become the Best Western Classic Champions.

In August, the Athletic Department decided not to allow collegiate apparel for any institution except Columbia College in their facilities. This means that anyone who wants to work out or shoot some hoops cannot wear University of Missouri or any other college’s apparel.
